International Week

International week: 9-13 July 2007

Staff and students at SJB had a fun packed week with a range of cross-curricular activities. Mr Lawrence and Mrs Kavanagh kick-started the week with an international assembly on global communication and show-cased presentations from SJB's Comenius project. Our partners at the Chinese association of Woking came into SJB to share their amazing culture and language with students from Years 7-10. Year 7 students were captivated by a Chinese lion dance in their assembly, followed by some Tai Chi routines. Afterwards, Mrs Edwards' design technology class enjoyed a lion dance and Tai Chi workshop where they got to try the costumes and discuss how they are made.  Many Year 7 students tried their hand at the art of Chinese brush painting. The year 7 students who took part all produced amazing artwork, although the paintings by Josh Foulkes, Millie Watson and Rchael Jervis were truly outstanding.  Year 8 music students had a lesson on authentic Chinese musical instruments and were taught how to play the chinese zither, moon guitar, dizi, erhu and willow guitar.  Year 9 food technology students were given an authentic Chinese cookery demonstration and then made and ate their own vegetable spring rolls, whilst year 9 linguists were given a taster lesson in Mandarin. finally, year 10 students tried some Tai Chi in their drama classesOur thanks go to the Chinese association of Woking for their continued support of international week at SJB. Our staff and students all appreciate the insight we are given to the Chinese language and culture, and international week is a fantastic opportunity to gain such a hands on experience of the international dimension across the curriculum.  Thanks also to Mr Criswick and Mr Yarrow from the MFL department and to the pe department for arranging an international it's a knockout competition for Year 8 as part of international week. Students used their linguistic knowledge whilst taking part in games involving berets, baguettes, Chinese hats, noodles and stripey tops!
