Modern Languages Department

SJB Modern languages department mission statement
As a Modern Languages Department in a Catholic Community, we encourage students of all abilities to learn about the international world around us, recognising and respecting different cultures, faiths and beliefs. Our approach is dynamic and challenging yet accessible and achievable. We offer all students opportunities to experience foreign study visits to broaden their horizons and make them aware that they are learning languages for life and for work in a multi-cultural world.

All students in Key Stage 3 study two languages.  On admission, they all study French, to carry on the excellent work done in most of our Primary feeder schools, and then choose either German or Italian as their second language.  Results at Key Stage 3 are excellent, with 97% of our students reaching Level 5, when the national average in 2007 was sadly only 58%.  83% of our students reached Level 6 in 2007, which is a phenomenal achievement.

In Key Stage 4, we offer four languages, French, Italian, German and Spanish.  These languages are also offered at Key Stage 5.

We also have breakfast and twilight classes in Mandarin, Urdu and Latin.
