Primary Outreach Programme

Primary teachers on a field trip to Paris with Mrs Short

As a Language College we offer a great deal of support to our local primary schools, including sending some SJB teachers to teach languages to Years 3 to 6, holding regular regional meetings, organising INSET for primary colleagues, including a visit to our partner primary schools in Paris.

Primary MFL conference at SJB

Primary teachers from several local schools attended another very successful day at SJB on Thursday 1 March.  The day started with the opportunity to observe language lessons, followed by a fascinating talk on primary education in Italy, France and China.  Mrs Kavanagh, Mrs Short and Mrs Jennie Clark from The Ashcombe Language College in Dorking shared their recent experiences of visiting primary schools in these three countries, along with some great photos.  Tanya Lattul (y12) joined mrs short to answer questions about her week's work experience in a French primary school, and her input was much appreciated by the audience.

June De Silva, primary MFL advisor in Surrey, gave us useful and practical ideas for working with native speakers in the classroom, and during the afternoon a range of workshops were on offer, including how to run an international week, using it in languages, setting up links with France, storytelling and using puppets.  many thanks to Liz O'Dell from St Dunstan's, Jennie Cark, and our own Mrs wWlson, Mrs Kavanagh and Mrs Short for running the workshops.

Julie King and her team once again provided an excellent lunch, and her homemade biscuits were very popular at coffee time!

As a Language College, we are delighted that so many local primary schools could join us for this conference.  We welcomed visitors from Barnsbury, Horsell, New Monument, St Dunstan's, The Marist, Westfield, Pirbright and Knaphill primary schools and look forward to seeing them again on 20 june for the follow up afternoon.
