Top school in Surrey modern languages GCSE 2007!

We are delighted that our languages at SJB are thriving against a national trend.  The government is suffering from a double take on its policy for disapplication at Key Stage 4, having commissioned a review of the situation.  It has been a divisive measure, with deep social implications.  It would be a tragedy if we were to revert to the situation where only the privileged were offered the opportunity of studying foreign languages.  The national centre for languages, CILT, conducted a survey where it was found that ‘in the independent sector there is no market failure of languages and no questioning of the place of language in the curriculum'.  (tes 17/11/06)

GCSE languages
It is really hard to single out students as so many did so well, but Lucy Dalton achieved A* in French, German and Spanish, Sophie Guinard A*s in French and Italian, Theo Jones, David Legrand, Robert McCLurey and Gino Weller A* in French and German, Daniele Quartana and Anna Riley A* in Italian and Spanish. A Level results were also fantastic this year, with many great performances, not least, Anne Marie Nevin who gained one of the highest marks in the country in Japanese!

A Level Languages
Year 11 students this year are predicted to perform even better than last year's cohort!  All the more reason to continue with languages at A Level.  We were delighted with the amount of interest shown at the Sixth Form open evening, and especially in the number of students wishing to study more than one language at A Level.  Many of the more prestigious universities are now not accepting certain subjects which are perceived to be an easier option, so able linguists, go for it!  Even if you wish to study subjects like Law, Accountancy, Science or Medecine, a language will add an extra string to your bow and single you out amongst the many highly qualified applicants.  In our multi-cultural society, British business is crying out for linguists to fight our corner in the market place.
