Italian exchange to Fano 2008

SJB visits Italy

Year 9 and Year 10 students of Italian at St John the Baptist School once more had the opportunity of participating in an exchange visit to Italy in February. They went to the Marche area to stay in a historical, seaside town called Fano, which boasts the oldest carnival in Italy. They were very lucky to catch the last night of the carnival on the day of their arrival, and were pelted with sweets and chocolates from the enormous floats parading the town centre. Day trips included a visit to the spectacular caves of Frassassi, where they saw stalactites and stalagmites of gigantic proportions. In the ancient university city of Urbino, the group were filmed by RAI international TV and were interviewed on their impressions of the new, interactive library at the palace of the Duke of Montefeltro. Venice was a long coach journey, but an unforgettable experience for the majority of the group who had never been there. Firm friendships were forged between Italian and English students, and despite a few initial tears of homesickness on the part of one or two students, there were many more tears on the day of departure, amazingly, even from the boys! Many are hoping to renew their friendships in the future.
